Welcome to the USS Viking!

"In a part of space where there are few rules, it's more important than ever that we hold fast to our own. In a region where shifting allegiances are commonplace, we have to have something stable to rely on. And we do... The principles and ideals of the Federation. As far as I'm concerned, those are the best allies we could have."
- Captain Kathryn Janeway, USS Voyager, Stardate 49342.5

The Intrepid-class USS Viking was commissioned in 2376, placing it at the forefront of Starfleet Command’s pivot back to its core principles of exploration and scientific discovery after the conclusion of the devastating Dominion War. Now in 2392, after sixteen years of dedicated service, the Viking is under the command of Commander Soraya Rezvani and has evolved from its classification as a light explorer into a multipurpose vessel that serves Starfleet by pursuing a wide variety of missions, including scientific investigation of new phenomenon; establishing contact with new civilizations and engaging in intercultural exchange; and protecting the strategic interests of the Federation. It presently serves as the flagship for Task Group D - "Gold Lions" in Obsidian Fleet's Task Force 72.

This simulation is a collective writing endeavor centering around the adventures of the Viking. While many such groups exist, the Viking is different in that it represents a return to the core values of Star Trek - the exploration of the unknown, the exploration of the self, and the exploration of moral and social issues through a science fiction medium. We are a simulation with a focus on player involvement and quality writing, and the command staff makes special effort to build an inclusive and welcoming community that appreciates diversity.

We invite you to learn more about the ship’s philosophy, its talented and diverse crew, and join us as we explore the galaxy together!

Howdy, Vikings!

I have some sad news. Unfortunately, I've decided to shut down the Viking. As you've likely noticed, I've struggled to keep up with things here and provide consistent quality support from the captain's chair, and I don't want to keep dragging out the inevitable. I wish I had the time, energy, and enthusiasm to keep operating the game and innovating different ways for us to tell our stories, but I'm just a little burned out on that end of things. I'm looking forward to retiring back to being a player for awhile so that I can focus on the writing and storytelling and not so much on the administration and responsibilities of being a commanding officer.

The challenges of running the game were a lot different than I anticipated much of the time, and I want to thank you all for sticking with me through all the missteps and hiccups. We've had a great core group of people here with many others coming and going and making wonderful contributions along the way. I've really enjoyed getting to know all of you, dive into creative worlds with you, and celebrate the series that we all love. Together, I think we pulled together one of the highest quality sims in Obsidian Fleet, and I'm proud of having been a part of that.

For those of you who want to keep playing your characters in Obsidian Fleet, I can recommend a sim run by our very own Becca (Selina Fenruse) - the SS Mary Rose. If you're fine with something slower paced and working with an unusual concept in the Trek universe, you can join me on Lacuna Station. If anyone else has recommendations, please feel free to share them with us!

I've had a great time writing with y'all and hope to join up with you again somewhere out in the simming world!

Howdy, Vikings!

You may have noticed from a flood of posts in your Inbox that Brendan is back, working diligently at his keyboard to give us plenty of quality material to read. As one of the founding members of the game, it was heartbreaking when he left us, so we're all really excited that he's back! And with a new hat, too...

Oh, yes, that's right, my fellow Vikings. Brendan didn't just return. No, no. He's returned with a purpose... TO LIFT THE CURSE!

"What curse?" you might ask. The Curse of the Chief Medical Officer, of course. If you've been around awhile, you'll know that the CMO's position is afflicted. Any fool brave enough to don the surgical gown/ceremonial robes is soon struck down by a sudden terminal case of inactivity. We've lost every doctor we've ever had. Salvona-Selmone, Tanner, Black, Blackburn, Cesaire, Tavik... All have fallen victim to the curse.

But Brendan intends to break the streak by shifting Cristobal Sefton over to CMO and making Tumaini a passenger for the time being. Be sure to send him a welcome back message and wish him luck!

» Mission Update

Posted on Thu May 18th, 2017 @ 11:30am by Captain Soraya Rezvani in General News

Howdy, Vikings! I wanted to draw your attention to a new mission document: the story map. (It's going to take a little zooming and panning to read the whole thing - sorry.)

Basically, I lifted the idea from a friend and fellow CO (Nikki of Lacuna Station), and it outlines the entire flow of the current mission as I see it unfolding. That's italicized because it isn't written in stone. We lean toward being collaborative and consultative, so I want to leave things open for your input. Maybe the story map lists something you don't want your character doing, or maybe you have an idea for things to go in a different direction. Give me feedback! It's always welcome.

So, why reveal the entire mission? Well, when the tables are turned and I'm a player, I'm often hesitant to write mission posts if I don't have a clear picture of the way the mission turns out. If I don't know the endgame, then I don't know how to use my character to support the vision of the mission. For example, if the crew is supposed to pack up and go to Philadelphia - but I don't know that - then I'm really throwing a spanner in the works by writing a post traipsing around Manhattan. Or if I'm the chief engineer and the ship is blowing up - but I don't know whether it's supposed to actually blow up or I'm supposed to miraculously save it - then I'm not able to contribute as well as I could have if I'd known ahead of time that we needed the ship later.

In short, I hope that by mapping everything out, we're all clear on the direction of the game/mission and we're more comfortable writing posts because of it.

If you have any thoughts/questions, feel free to get in touch! Otherwise, don't forget about our subplots signup sheet and happy writing!

» New Mission: Terra Nova

Posted on Sun Apr 16th, 2017 @ 9:40pm by Captain Soraya Rezvani in General News

Howdy, Vikings! Our new mission, Terra Nova, is open for posting now. You all have a general sense of what's going on in the mission from the PM I sent around a week or so ago. Be sure to check out the mission's trailer (on the front page of the website or here). We don't have a mission guide right now - there's a possibility we'll have one in the future giving more detail about our surroundings. For now, here are the things we need to know:

(1) Everyone's abandoned ship in escape pods heading for New York City, just across the Hudson River from New York City. (The rendezvous point will be there because we'll be split up initially.)

(2) During transit, some escape pods might be attacked and some will simply drift off course, breaking us up into three groups. Captain Ngabo's group will make it to the original landing site near the river. Major Banxi Jefor (David) will have the second group, and Commander Gerda Agar (Ben) will have the third group. They'll have to make their way to Ngabo at the original landing site. A dampening field is preventing everything but very short-range communications.

(3) Earth is an absolute wreck. Visible in the distance will be a large energy shield over a portion of Manhattan. The accident that brought the ship to the future didn't exactly leave us with plenty of time to examine our surroundings so knowledge about things might be a little spotty. We can assume that some portions of the crew might understand the Sol system has no Starfleet activity, some alien energy signatures, and subspace has been destroyed. David, Ben, and myself will take the lead on the initial encounters with what's left of Earth's population.

(4) The broad goal of the mission is to get back to the Viking and back to our own time. We'll get some help in that department from the remnants of the Federation on Earth. There's plenty of room for subplots within the general setting - feel free to stretch your creative muscles! You can find the subplots sign up sheet here.

(5) If you feel some information is missing, you'd like to know more about the main plot, or anything else, just drop me a line!

» Colony Mission

Posted on Fri Mar 3rd, 2017 @ 7:22pm by Captain Soraya Rezvani in General News

Howdy, Vikings! As you've probably noticed, I'm starting up the departmental subplots for this mission. (As a reminder, you can find them here.) Your characters have been added to the appropriate posts and subplots. The subplots were implemented after our Viking survey indicated people have a preference for being "assigned" various objectives related to their departmental responsibilities.

However, that does not mean you're required to participate. For instance, if you're in Ops, there are about three different subplots related to that department. You can choose one, remove yourself from the other two. Or you can choose none, too, and decide to write about something else. In order to make things more manageable for people who are participating, please do your best to either confirm you'll be writing in that subplot or remove your character from it.

I should have all the subplots started by tomorrow. If you have any questions or concerns about the mission or anything else, feel free to let me know!
